The Havening Techniques® are a modality that has been designed to help individuals overcome problems that are the consequence of traumatic encoding. Havening Techniques belong to a larger group of treatments called psychosensory therapies, which use sensory input to alter thought, mood and behaviour. Havening is a system comprised of protocols and methods that uses touch as a therapeutic tool which we call Havening Touch®.

There are three distinct applications,

Phobias, chronic pain, anger, grief, cravings, PTSD, distress, difficulties learning, havening, trauma
The use of Havening Techniques® can provide relief from emotional disturbances, stress and other symptoms (from encoded psychological trauma)
Achieve your goals and peak performance by using The Havening Techniques®.

The Havening Techniques are powerful tools that can be used to treat the consequences of encoded traumatic or stressful memories. They can be used within a psycho-therapeutic setting with professional mental health care clinicians that have been fully trained and certified in The Havening Techniques. In addition, Havening can be used by non-licensed practitioners as a protocol for coaching sessions, or as a tool in allied health care practice by individuals that have been fully trained and certified in Havening. Havening can also be used as a self-help technique and shared with family members and friends. *Please do not use the Havening Technique with yourself for a serious trauma or if you suffer from any psychological disorders. We advise that you seek the help of a professional mental health care provider who is certified in the Havening Techniques if you have experienced severe trauma or suffer from a psychological disorder.

What Types Of Problems Do The Havening Techniques® Address?

Information about The Havening Techniques®

The Havening Techniques®

  • are a psychosensory therapy

  • were created and developed by Dr Ronald Ruden and Dr Steven Ruden

  • were created through the Drs researching and gaining an understanding of eastern energy psychology via a scientific perspective.

  • have a scientific basis

  • are described by Dr Ruden as  ‘a new way of healing’

  • use sensory input to alter thought, mood and behavior

  • are easy, quick and pleasant to do

  • Havening Touch® can be applied by oneself

  • Havening Touch® can be applied by a facilitator

  • involve using processes which create permanent change

  • provide extraordinary results as the person is freed from dehabilitating triggers

  • processes change the brain permanently (as AMPA receptors in the brain are depotentiated and re-absorbed)

  • can stop the negative effects on psyche and body (related to encoded information about traumatic experiences)

  • enable the person's brain to think that a safe haven has been reached

  • allow a new perspective of the event to be created

  • start the process of healthy ongoing change as the landscape of the brain alters

How do The Havening Techniques® work?

The consequences of trauma and stressful life events are stored in the brain and are activated by conscious or inadvertent recall. Once this recall occurs, symptoms are generated. This activation also makes the pathway that generates these feelings subject to disruption.

The Havening Techniques® are designed to disrupt this pathway through a process called synaptic depotentiation. The essence of how Havening works is that stimulation of skin receptors in specific areas of the body (face, shoulders and upper arms and palms of hands in particular) increases neurochemicals in the brain such as serotonin and GABA resulting in an increase in slow, low frequency brain waves. These Delta waves can help depotentiate activated AMPA receptors in post-synaptic neurons in the amygdala through dephosphorylation of those receptors due to the action of the enzyme calcineurin. Essentially the apparatus for triggering fight, flight, freeze and rage responses, is delinked from the stored memory of the traumatic event.

This means that although the memory can be remembered, the person does not have the unhelpful responses any more when they think of that event or if they encounter previous triggers. Another way of explaining it, is that after the process is complete the subjective emotions related to the memory become objective and the person reports feeling calmer.

Is The Havening Technique® Safe?

Every healing method therapy has side effects. Therefore, if you have experienced a serious trauma or have psychological disorder, we recommend using the Havening Technique only with a professional mental health care provider that have been fully trained and certified in the Havening Technique. Potential risks with using the Havening Technique include in-session abreactions (crying, anger, physical movements), post-havening lightheadedness and rarely, a worsening of symptoms or emotional numbing. These last two effects are a consequence of bringing to awareness long since forgotten, but biologically active memories. These should be treated by a qualified mental health practitioner. In addition, highly traumatized individuals who use anger as defense may become agitated by the premature removal of their protective anger and which may increase their distress. If you choose to use to use the Havening Technique as a self-help tool, it is possible to experience some emotional distress and/or physical discomfort and additional unresolved memories may surface during or after using the Havening technique that can be perceived as negative. Emotional material may continue to surface after using the Havening Technique indicating other issues may be addressed. If you inadvertently experience any distressing reactions or negative side effects, you are strongly advised to stop using the Havening Techniques® and to seek appropriate professional help.

Are The Havening Techniques® Easy To Learn?

Yes, the protocols and methods are easy to learn. Practice and skill, is required to locate where the core elements of the trauma lie. Like all healing methods, experience and observation and sensory acuity skills play a major role.
