The Two Stages of the Certification Program

Stage One

This stage is suitable for enthusiasts or as the first stage of the certification process.

Working with a great team of assistants, we use experiential learning methods, such as demonstrations, Havening and being Havened, use of Neurosky to explore brainwaves and heart-rate variables, using technology to illustrate electrical field, drawing, video, powerpoint, diagrams, metaphors, drama, quizzes, unpacking sessions, and looking at the material in different ways to make learning easy. I am particularly interested in sharing key principles, explaining 'tools' and their 'uses and likely outcomes' to form a solid foundation. This training enables creativity,  confidence and higher success rates.

Join us, a small group, in a special place, for a weekend of participant-centered learning. Discover for yourself both the changes that are experienced, the scientific and biological theories of how these innovative processes work, and how to best use Havening Touch® and the many different Havening Techniques to help either yourself or others.

Dr. Ronald Ruden, who created Havening, describes the effect of using these techniques as providing ‘a better way of living through neuroscience’. People who have experienced the techniques say that they are 'effective' and 'easy and pleasant to use'. A study at King’s College London showed that after just one session of Havening nearly all of the participants were able to concentrate better, let go of disturbing thoughts and eliminate worry, and were able to boost their self-esteem. The results also showed that most of the participants were still benefiting from those changes two months after the single session of Havening (see Testimonials).

Dr Ronald Ruden and his twin brother Steven have a deep interest in neuroscience, and from this viewpoint they set out to research Energy Psychology (EP) some decades ago. The root of EP is traditional Chinese medical procedures which employ touching acupoints on the meridian channels to heal both physical and emotional problems. EP claims to resolve a wide variety of conditions including phobias, somatisation responses, post-traumatic stress, chronic pain, as well as a whole host of emotional states such as pathological fear, guilt, anger, jealousy and grief. The Rudens’ research enabled them to propose a new system grounded in neuroscience and clinical observation. They called this system Havening, meaning 'to put one in a safe place', a safe haven. Havening produces some of its effect by synaptic (receptor) depotentiation (removal). This process disrupts the pathway laid down during the encoding of a traumatic event (illustration below). This type of Havening can also be described with a more technical term which defines the neurobiological mechanism, Amygdala Depotentiation Technique (ADT). Literally receptors on part of the brain called the amygdala are removed (illustration below). This means that when a person is responding to stimuli with a fight, flight, or freeze response, and the Havening process is applied, a physiological change can occur. The result of this physiological change is that when the stimuli are encountered in the future the response will be calmer, objective or positive. This begins a series of ongoing changes to the person's 'landscape' (electro-chemical system), and in turn to their perceptions and behaviours. Other types of Havening facilitate change in the landscape and how this works is explained on the training.

  • how Havening relates to other modalities (such as NLP, TFT and hypnosis)

  • hear about how Havening has been used with anxiety, panic attacks, abandonment issues, fears, phobias, distressing memories, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anger, grief, guilt, cravings, compulsions, emotional eating, depression, stress, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), confidence issues, chronic pain, and more.

  • can use all the tools and techniques confidently and creatively

  • have gained your Diploma of Certification and are practising as a Certified Havening Techniques® Practitioner and are represented on the originators' website.

Stage Two

 This stage is for students wanting to continue studying with the aim of becoming certified practitioners of the Havening Techniques.

The Primer, The Procedural Guide, and videos (accessed at the educational portal) are used to support study at this stage. The documents for case studies, etc, can be downloaded from the education portal at and completed case studies sheets are uploaded here also.

Stage Two is a period of self-supported learning on the whole, it's a time to experiment and note down your discoveries as you learn through doing the case-studies and self-havening projects. Stage Two also has a mentoring element and usually students find it is ideal to have around three sessions with Carol via video call during this period. These are often at the outset, in the middle and towards the end but some people have used them when they have felt they would like to discuss a case or a subject. Any questions can be discussed with Carol via email, phone or video call. You can also take part and contribute to the Havening Techniques 'closed Facebook forum' and connect with other students to practice and build your skills. The forum is also a useful platform to ask the creators, 

developers, trainers and other practitioners if they would share their ideas about a subject. The forum can also be used as a resource as many questions have been explored already and these are archived and can be found using the search function. 


In brief, the elements of Stage Two are:

- Science Review: 44 questions in multiple-choice type format

- Case Studies: Document thirty case studies which demonstrate The Havening Techniques®
- Two videos of yourself using The Havening Techniques® with two different people. These digital/video films must be a minimum length of 15 minutes and a maximum length of 60 minutes. 
- Write a professional profile for your profile on the Havening website

Case Studies

Working with a range of clients to explore and become confident with the application of the concepts of Havening and the use and results gained using each of the different kinds of Havening. Document (on the forms provided) and submit a range of cases and 30 Havenings. For example, the presenting issues, actions made and the debriefing of each session is recorded on a simple intake sheet (the client gives permission but is annoymous on the sheet, represented only by a letter, for example, Client A), and each type of Havening used is described on an separate sheet. For example if in session one, four Havenings were carried out, these would be documented on a sheet for each, i.e. Event Havening, Transpirational Havening, Ifformational Havening and Affirmational Havening may have been used. Practioners have said that recording their case studies helped them consider their and their clients experiences of Havening and encouraged them to use and learn about each of the different Havening Techniques with a range of clients, as well as documenting personal experiences of being Havened or using self-Havening. The information you provide about how you are using Havening also helps us continually improve our educational program.


Science Review

Practitioners have described this as 'a useful aid as you learn about the scientific concepts at the base of Havening'. They have also said that it has given them confidence that they have grasped the ideas and can express them. The information you provide about your understanding of the scientific concepts at the foundation of the Havening Techniques also helps us continually improve our educational program.



Make two videos of yourself using The Havening Techniques® with two different people. These digital/video films must be a minimum length of 15 minutes and a maximum length of 60 minutes.


Practitioners have described how making these videos helped them see how they were working, in some cases study how they were working, make changes to improve their technique and celebrate their skills.


Write a professional profile 

This profile is for your listing on the website. After successfully completing all three stages, certification as  Havening Practitioner is granted from New York HQ. The new practitioner is listed and can upload a profile on the website. After the first year, practitioners pay $99 annually to remain a practitioner and to be listed on the website.

Certification process and evaluation​

Once everything is completed, send it to me in one clearly labeled package (USB stick or via Dropbox). If you prefer, send me ten case studies as a starting point and we can have a video meeting to answer any queries you may have.

I will look at the case studies, written material and videos very carefully and will email you to let you know the results of your science review and make any helpful points I can. If all is well and I am content that you have demonstrated a level of competency in The Havening Techniques®, this training is complete. Information from HQ

'If after viewing the case studies and videos the program director, in his/her sole discretion, determines the applicant has not demonstrated a level of competency in The Havening Techniques® to continue in the program, then the applicant will be notified. In such event, the program director may ask the applicant to submit additional videos. The exact number of which to be determined solely by the program director or the program director may make recommendations to the applicant to bring the applicant up to speed. In either event, it's possible that the applicant will be disqualified from our program.'
